Bush Mango comes to RIT
Music program presents performance by prominent African dance ensemble
Bush Mango, the Rochester-based African drum and dance ensemble which has earned national recognition for its artistic and education efforts, will present a demonstration and workshop at Rochester Institute of Technology Oct. 28.
The free public event, sponsored by RIT’s music program, will be held at 4 p.m. in Ingle Auditorium in the Student Alumni Union.
“Bush Mango presents the traditional African dance and drumming of Guinea, paying tribute to the art form while also engaging audiences of all ages in the experience,” notes Carl Atkins, professor and director of the music program at RIT. “The troupe is one of Rochester’s artistic jewels and we are honored to have them grace the stage at RIT.”
Co-founded by musician Blair Hornbuckle and dancer/choreographer Colleen Hendrick in 1989, Bush Mango has performed in numerous festivals around the country and premiered the West African ballet “Walking Nimba” in 2004. The troupe was named cultural organization of the year by the Arts and Cultural Council of Greater Rochester in 2006 and was one of the featured performers at the inaugural Nazareth College Dance Festival in 2010.
