Economics professor honored for research

Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, the Arthur J. Gosnell Professor of Economics in Rochester Institute of Technology’s College of Liberal Arts, has been awarded the Mattei Dogan Foundation Prize for his body of interdisciplinary research. The award, deliberated upon by an international jury comprised of International Social Science Council and Mattei Dogan Foundation members, will be presented to Batabyal at the World Social Science Forum in Montreal in October.

“Receiving this prize is a strong affirmation of the esteem in which the interdisciplinary research I have undertaken thus far—in economics and ecology, and in economics and geography—is held,” Batabyal says. “I believe that my past research projects on the management of dynamic and stochastic ecological-economic systems such as rangelands, fisheries and forests, and my work on invasive species management, were key in my selection as the 2013 recipient of this prize.”

Batabyal’s research interests include applied microeconomics, environmental economics, natural resource economics, ecological economics, development economics, international trade theory, regional economics and entrepreneurship. He is the author of more than 500 publications, trade journal articles, book chapters and academic papers. In addition, he is editor-in-chief of Letters in Spatial and Resource Sciences and president of the Association of Indian Economic and Financial Studies.

The Mattei Dogan Foundation Prize was established in 2005 to distinguish social scientists whose work has advanced knowledge in the social sciences by cross-disciplinary boundaries and recombining different specialized subject fields in their research or writing. Nominations for the award, which comes with more than $6,500 in prize money, are made by International Social Science Council members and other professional associations in various disciplines, as well as by universities and academic institutions.
