Inaugural Liberal Arts Lecture Discusses History of Wine Making

The College of Liberal Arts at Rochester Institute of Technology has created a new speaker series to promote cutting-edge research and scholarship in the arts and humanities, while also showcasing the work of the college’s faculty and students.

The inaugural Liberal Arts Lecture and Reception will be “Writing About Wine,” presented by Robert Ulin, dean of the College of Liberal Arts. The talk will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 11 in the 1829 Room in the Student Alumni Union.

The talk will examine the development and history of wine making in France and the United States, as well as the impact of the industry on the literature and culture of these nations. Ulin is an international expert on the anthropology of work and has conducted extensive studies on the unique communities and cultures that have been created in wine-growing regions throughout the world.

Prior to joining RIT in 2008, Ulin served as chair of the Department of Anthropology at Western Michigan University. He is the author of Vintages and Traditions: An Ethnohistory of Southwest French Wine Cooperatives and is an elected fellow of the American Anthropological Association.

The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception in the Fireside Lounge in the Student Alumni Union.
