Journalist David Cay Johnston Provides Blueprint for Economic Recovery

Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist and best selling author David Cay Johnston will present his thoughts on the current economic crisis and what can be done to fix it at 8 p.m. March 9 in the Ingle Auditorium at Rochester Institute of Technology. The presentation, “A Path Back to Prosperity for America,” is part of the Caroline Werner Gannett Project’s Visionaries in Motion Series.

Johnston will provide his thoughts on the government and business policies that contributed to the 2008 financial meltdown and the reforms that can be implemented to make the system more efficient and fairer for all Americans. The talk will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a book signing reception.

Johnston’s long career in investigative journalism includes 13 years as the tax reporter for The New York Times, where he won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for beat reporting. He also has worked for the Los Angeles Times and Philadelphia Inquirer and is currently a columnist for The Nation.

His books, Free Lunch and Perfectly Legal, chronicle the use of the U.S. tax system to promote what Johnston describes as the expansion of corporate welfare and support for the very rich at the expense of ordinary Americans. Perfectly Legal made The New York Times bestseller list and won the 2003 Book of the Year Award from Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc.

The Caroline Werner Gannett Project was created in 2006 by Mary Lynn Broe, Gannett Professor of the Humanities at RIT. Along with the interdisciplinary Gannett Working Group, Broe brings to campus international scholars, authors and artists in lectures, colloquia and workshops that explore new connections across the sciences, technologies, social sciences and humanities.
