RIT partners with Roberts Wesleyan

Agreement defines a clear pathway to teacher certification

Rochester Institute of Technology has signed an educational agreement with Roberts Wesleyan College that will allow students from RIT to simultaneously take classes in Roberts’ graduate education programs easily and at an accelerated level.

“Since RIT does not have a school of education on its campus, we are partnering with other institutions in the region to provide our students excellent opportunities to pursue teaching careers,” said James Winebrake, dean of RIT’s College of Liberal Arts. “This new relationship with Roberts Wesleyan represents one of those opportunities.”

The agreement means undergraduate students at RIT who aspire to become teachers may take courses at Roberts that will help them to earn a master’s degree in education at Roberts.

The students may also be eligible for a 10 to 25 percent discount in tuition at Roberts, depending on the number of students participating in the agreement.

The agreement was led by Assistant Dean John Smithgall in the College of Liberal Arts.

“Roberts Wesleyan is a great partner for us,” Smithgall said. “And this agreement allows students studying in the liberal arts, sciences, math, and other fields at RIT to obtain both an undergraduate degree in a particular field and a graduate degree in education in only five years.”

Students who complete the program and pass the New York state certification exams will be fully prepared to teach in K-12 schools in the state of New York and across the country.
