The award will give them time to finish research and books

Three faculty members from Rochester Institute of Technology’s College of Liberal Arts have been named recipients of a Paul and Francena Miller Research Fellowship.

This year’s recipients are:

  • Trent Hergenrader, assistant professor, Department of English, for his book project, Collaborative World Building: A Guide for Classrooms, Writing Groups, and Role-Playing Gamers.
  • Hinda Mandell, assistant professor, School of Communication, for her book project, Sex Scandals, Gender and Power in Contemporary American Politics.
  • Sarah Burns, assistant professor, Department of Political Science, for her research surrounding the constitutional roots of war power and the role of presidential authority during military activities.

Each awardee receives a $12,000 fellowship, typically used for a course release in the upcoming academic year and any costs related to the completion of their project.

Nearly 30 faculty members have received the fellowship since it was established in 2001 to help them pursue their scholarly and professional projects in social sciences, humanities and the performing arts. It is intended to help with professional discourse or their discipline by the publication of public presentation of their own scholarly or professional work.

“For us, the program has had a tremendous impact on the careers of more than two dozen faculty and has helped them transform the college into a major contributor of academic scholarship at the institute,” said College of Liberal Arts Dean James Winebrake.

The award is funded and named in honor of the late Paul Miller, who was president of RIT from 1969 to 1979, and his wife, Francena.
