Safety Training and Certification

The following table details the types of access to the cleanroom and the training that is required.

Badges and Certification Intended for Level of Access Training and Fees
Class Badge
  • Students enrolled in class with lab sections in the SNL
  • Participants in workshops
  • Provides genera access to users enrolled in RIT classes or training workshop supervised by an instructor or a TA.
  • Not eligible to use tools without direct supervision of a Certified User.
  • Cannot reserve or login into tools.
  • Delivered through RIT MYCourses.
  • No Fees
Researcher Badge
  • Undergraduate students engaged in research, classes, senior design projects, or independent studies.
  • Graduate student researchers
  • RIT Faculty researchers
  • External users
  • User can work unsupervised in all areas of the cleanroom, except the wet etch bays.
  • Good for M-F, 8am to 5pm.
  • Can use specific tools after competing Tool Certification
  • A mix of in person and selfdirected training. Titled New Researcher Training.
  • Badge good for one year and awarded after passing online test. Must be completed in the semester it was started.
  • Applicable fees, reported in fee list.
  • Refresher Training is required every year to keep this level of access
Chemical Certification
  • Researchers who have earned their Researcher Badge and need access to use the wet bays.
  • A basic knowledge of chemistry and chemical processing is required beforehand
  • An addition to a SNL Researcher Badge.
  • User can work unsupervised in all areas of the cleanroom, except the wet etch bays.
  • Good for M-F, 8am to 5pm.
  • A mix of in person and selfdirected training. Titled New Researcher Training.
  • Badge good for one year and awarded after passing online test. Must be completed in the semester it was started.
  • Applicable fees, reported in fee list.
  • Refresher Training is required every year to keep this level of access
Tool Certification
  • Researchers who need to use major processing tools without supervision.
  • Researcher needing occasional access to tools may opt out and work under supervision of a certified user on the specific tools (Researcher Badge still required).
  • Users can operate the tool unsupervised using standard tool operating procedures found in the manual for that tool.
  • A mix of in person and selfdirected training.
  • User must demonstrate proficiency in using tool.
  • No additional fees
Off Hours Access
  • Researchers needing access to the SNL outside of normal business hours.
  • An addition to a SNL Researcher Badge.
  • Weekdays – 6am to 8am early start.
  • Weekdays – 5pm to midnight
  • Weekends – 6am to midnight
  • Granted on an as needed basis.
  • User must have significant industrial experience or more than a semester of active lab use.
  • Granted at the discretion of SNL management.
Superuser Certification
  • Researchers who have substantial SNL experience on multiple tools.
  • Superusers are expected to be a resource for others in the SNL. This includes safety matters.
  • Superusers can certify other lab users on specific tools where they are deemed to be experienced users.
  • Superusers participate in a yearly safety review that provides valuable feedback to the SNL on operations in the lab.
  • Exempted from the yearly safety  test.
