Get on the list at Walk the Moon
Scott Saldinger ’89, ’91 (CIAS) is hoping people shut up and get on the list at Saturday’s Walk the Moon concert.
Saldinger is a volunteer with the Love Hope Strength Foundation, which hosts bone marrow drives at concerts and festivals around the world. He reached out to his alma mater to organize a drive in conjunction with SpringFest.
The process is simple: Concertgoers sign up for the international bone marrow donor registry with a cheek swab. Saldinger said he hopes to register at least 100 people at the concert because based on past experience it will likely mean a match.
“I have raised thousands of dollars for organizations and I don’t know where a penny of it goes,” Saldinger said. “With this I know I have been able to help save dozens of lives.”
Kelly Hurlburt, WITR general manager, said the radio station will be sending volunteers to help with the registry.
Love Hope Strength was created in 2008 by cancer survivors Mike Peters of the rock band The Alarm and James Chippendale, an insurance executive in the music industry. The organization has been able to add more than 125,000 music fans to the registry and found more than 2,400 life-saving matches.
Saldinger, who lives in Dallas and is a digital sales account manager with CA Technologies, became active with the foundation during a bone marrow drive at the Big Shot at the former Cowboys Stadium in 2013. He is co-president of the Dallas/Fort Worth alumni chapter and the 2015 RIT Alumni Volunteer of the Year.
Doors for the Walk the Moon concert hosted by the College Activities Board open at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Gene Polisseni Center. The concert featuring the band, best known for its hit “Shut Up and Dance,” is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. To volunteer, go to www.lovehopestrength.org/get-on-the-list-events/ and click on Walk the Moon-Rochester.
