Dress for the weather — rain or shine. Wear comfortable walking shoes. If you need a cane or walker, please bring one and use it. Don’t forget your camera. This trip is NOT wheelchair accessible. For those with mobility issues, they can spend more time around the Visitor Centers, both at the Falls and at the Fort. There is a video shown at Old Fort Niagara and there are many historic exhibits for browsing.
Enjoy a relaxing day in the Niagara Frontier with your friends at Osher! We will spend the morning in Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the nation. It will feature a cruise on the Maid of the Mist, that takes you to the awesome Horseshoe (Canadian) Falls. The new Visitor Center will be opening in the Spring of 2023, and you will have time to see the new exhibits and browse the shops.
In the afternoon, the bus will take us to Old Fort Niagara, where the river meets Lake Ontario. This fort was first constructed by the French and later captured by the British. After the Revolution, Fort Niagara was under American control. You will see evidence of daily life on the frontier during over a century of conflict.
In between the two stops, we will enjoy lunch at the Como Restaurant and Lounge in the Little Italy neighborhood of Niagara Falls. It will feature a buffet with the following choices:
- Meat sauce Macaroni
- Roast chicken and roast beef
- Parslied potatoes and the hot vegetable of the day
- Salad, breads, pizza
- Dessert
- Coffee, tea
If you have special dietary needs, please indicate so on the registration questionnaire.
Related Lectures (Hybrid Format)
On Tuesday, August 1 at 10 am all members are invited to a free lecture (hybrid format - attend in person at Osher or via Zoom), featuring two speakers. Our first speaker is Chuck Sparnecht, a long-time member and course leader at Osher. More details will follow.
Our second speaker, Tim McDonnell, is also a “veteran” Osher course leader. He has led many different courses over the last 17 years. Tim is also an Associate Adjunct Professor at Monroe Community College and the Coordinator of the NY Geographic Alliance. His topic for the lecture will be “Niagara Falls, Where the Circus Never Ends.”
