- How to Report
RIT community members are encouraged to report all crimes and safety-related incidents to the Public Safety Department in a timely manner by dialing 585-475-3333, texting 585-205-8333 or using the Tigersafe app. Public Safety Officers will provide information and resources on reporting a crime to the appropriate law enforcement agency when requested by the victim. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has authorized Public Safety to file motor vehicle accident reports. Copies of these accident reports may be obtained from Public Safety by individuals involved in an accident. Incidents involving student records are requested through the Office of Student Conduct.
Firearms, dangerous weapons of any kind, fireworks, or explosive devices are not permitted on the RIT campus. Possession of any of the above could result in arrest and university judicial sanction. Confiscated illegal items are turned over to appropriate law enforcement agencies.
All other emergencies can be reported directly to the Public Safety Department by by dialing 585-475-3333, texting 585-205-8333 or using the Tigersafe app. These emergency numbers are also displayed on all Public Safety vehicles. There are also several on campus direct dial emergency telephones and free on campus public telephones located in lobbies and public areas of many buildings.
If you do not want to pursue action within RIT's student conduct system or the local criminal court system, you may still want to consider making a confidential report. With your permission, a Public Safety Investigator can file a report on the details of the incident without revealing your identity. The purpose of a confidential report is to comply with your wish to keep the matter confidential while taking steps to ensure the safety of yourself and others. RIT can also determine if patterns exist with regard to a particular location or method and alert the campus community to potential danger. Confidential reports are disclosed in the annual crime statistics for the Institution.
