A First-hand Look at Global Health Challenges

Janice Fung, a double major in biomedical sciences and biotechnology and molecular bioscience, spent a summer studying abroad in Nigeria. She experienced global health challenges first hand.

“In our laboratories at RIT, we’re so used to having fancy equipment and immediate diagnostics. In Nigeria, they don’t have the same resources or the funding that we have, so to see them have immediate diagnostics for illnesses but using very simple methods was really cool. The turning point for me was seeing how prominent infectious diseases are in developing countries. You read about this in textbooks and you discuss the topic in class, but to experience it first-hand was really eye-opening.”
