RIT’s team will develop the technology needed for a point-of-care diagnostics system built on integrated photonics. Capable of accurate detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, the new system could reduce the need for expensive equipment and specialized expertise to better inform care decisions in underserved, resource-limited communities.

The National Institutes of Health are funding RIT scientists to explore vesicular stomatitis virus’s (VSV) potential for treating prostate cancer. Associate Professor Maureen Ferran from the Thomas H. Gosnell School of Life Sciences secured a three-year, $451,718 Research Enhancement Award (R15) grant from the NIH to investigate prostate cancer cells’ susceptibility to the virus.

A national manufacturing institute led by Nabil Nasr, associate provost and founding director of RIT’s Golisano Institute for Sustainability, is marking five years of accelerating the transition to a circular economy in the United States.

The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute is collaborating with Syracuse University’s Center for Sustainable Community Solutions on a grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to assist communities and stakeholders in New York state with reducing the amount of edible food that goes to waste.  

Soon industrial robots in warehouses will be smart enough to know which has the right of way in busy aisles. Researchers at RIT are developing an intelligent materials handling system for warehouses that integrates smart technologies.

Richard O’Shaughnessy, an associate professor in RIT’s School of Mathematical Sciences, was awarded a prestigious fellowship to spend the next year preparing for an “onslaught” of gravitational wave discoveries. He is one of 10 faculty worldwide named 2022 Simons Fellows in Theoretical Physics and is the first RIT faculty member to receive the award.

Barbara Lohse, head of RIT’s Wegmans School of Health and Nutrition, hopes to reach 10,000 New Yorkers with free resources promoting healthy nutrition and lifestyle tools that have been tested and shown to be effective.

Scientists look to space for origins of the solar system; chemical engineers like Poornima Padmanabhan are searching for the origins of life based on minute systems of molecules. Padmanabhan recently received a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award for “Chirality and polymer thermodynamics: frustration and amplification.”

RIT received a nearly $1 million National Science Foundation grant that will provide scholarships for computing students and help researchers explore new ways to improve computing education. Sharon Mason, a professor in RIT’s School of Information, is principal investigator of the project.

Caroline Easton, director of the RIT Priority Behavioral Health and Clinical Psychology program, was awarded $100,000 from the Buffalo-based Patrick P. Lee Foundation to create a new clinical psychology postdoctoral fellowship.

The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute has announced selections for its 2021-2022 Community Grants Program as part of the organization’s ongoing efforts to continue improving the health and environmental quality of New York state.
