Crain's Detroit Business interviews Matthew Hoffman, associate professor of mathematical sciences, about how microplastics are appearing in a disturbingly wide range of places in the Great Lakes Basin. 

RIT will showcase a variety of research projects undertaken by students and faculty-mentors over the 2020-21 academic year during the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, held virtually July 29 through Aug. 4. Keynote speaker Michael Johnson, from the University of Arizona, will discuss “Lessons in being wrong and achieving comfort in chaos.” 

A team of RIT students was granted the opportunity to conduct an independent security test of the ExpressVote XL voting machine for Election Systems & Software (ES&S), the largest voting device manufacturer in the United States.

Third-year hospitality and tourism management major Maddie Reim worked with Saunders College of Business Associate Professor Jerrie Hsieh on research pertaining to the return of consumers to restaurant dining. Reim will present her findings during RIT’s Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Two electrical engineering students are refining an attitude control system and are seeking ways to reduce the impact of atmospheric heat that changes a spacecraft’s orientation during launch. Both students will share information about their work for CSTARS-2 during the 2021 Undergraduate Research Symposium.

A team of first-year RIT students developed a system that uses imaging technology and lasers to produce artistic caricatures. Three of the students will showcase the system at the Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Marissa Schroeter’s summer undergraduate research explores a global health issue with a local twist. Her work prospects for new antibiotic compounds produced by two bacterial strains collected from Lake Ontario. She will present her findings at the RIT Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Saranya Dadi, a second-year computer science student, is conducting research to make machine learning for automated surveillance systems fairer. Dadi is presenting the preliminary state of her work at RIT’s Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Gigi Zheng, a third-year laboratory science technology major from New York City, will share her research at this year’s RIT Undergraduate Research Symposium during a pre-recorded presentation.

Kaitlin Gunther, a fourth-year psychology and computer science double major from Webster, N.Y., is trying to better understand how fish view the world. Gunther will present her research, Visual Discrimination of Rotated 3D Unicolor Objects in Goldfish, at RIT’s virtual Undergraduate Research Symposium.
