Rides, games, and endless fun at the Great New York State Fair

As summer transitions into autumn, the Great New York State Fair, which ran from August 21 to September 2, 2024, stands out as a seasonal highlight. This 13-day extravaganza celebrates New York's agricultural heritage and brings people together in a unique way. If you missed it this year, be sure to mark your calendars for next Labor Day weekend!

The fair is a treasure trove of experiences, featuring agricultural showcases with cows, lambs, zebras, and camels, along with exhilarating rides. While I didn’t see a cow give birth, I was captivated by the board displaying the times and names of calves born during the fair, including Jereth, who made his debut at 9:30 AM on my visit. These moments connect us to New York's agricultural roots and the hard work behind our food.

Beyond the exhibits, the fair buzzed with laughter and excitement. The midway was alive with classic carnival rides like the Tilt-a-Whirl and Cyclops, and the air was filled with delicious aromas from fair food, including refreshing lemonade and mouthwatering funnel cakes. It was a true celebration of the sights, sounds, and tastes that make the Great New York State Fair special.

For us RIT students, weekends are a chance to make the most of our time outside of studies. Rochester is rich with year-round events, from concerts to sports games and festivals. The RIT Events Calendar is a fantastic resource for discovering local happenings that foster connections beyond campus life.

The surrounding areas of Rochester also offer hidden gems waiting to be explored. Whether it’s a peaceful park for a picnic, a cozy coffee shop, or a vibrant festival, there’s always something happening nearby. For those looking to escape the academic grind, consider taking a short trip to explore these attractions. They not only provide a break but also enrich our college experience by allowing us to engage with the community and make new friends.

As we look forward to next year’s Great New York State Fair, I encourage my fellow RIT peers to seek out similar events. These experiences are about building memories and connections within the vibrant tapestry of Rochester. So, as you plan your weekends, keep an eye out for fairs, festivals, and local happenings. Embrace the chance to explore, learn, and celebrate the community that surrounds us while making the most of our time at RIT.
