My Experience with the RIT Concert Band

From 5th through 12th grade, I was always a part of the different concert bands offered in my elementary, middle, and high school. When I was applying to colleges, finding a school with a vibrant band or ensemble program was non-negotiable for me. Playing the flute in a band setting brings me immense joy and fulfillment. Fortunately, RIT has a fantastic Concert Band, and being a part of it has been one of the highlights of my time at RIT so far!

Audition Process

The audition process is super easy! You sign up for a time and date to audition for the band director, usually within the first couple weeks of the semester! If you get into the band, the director will give you an access code to enroll in the class, and if not then you can sign up for lessons on your instrument!

Rehearsals and Concerts

Once you're in, rehearsals depend on which band you're placed in — Concert Band White or Concert Band Orange. Concert Band White, focusing primarily on grades 2-4 repertoire, rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. in SAU A130. Concert Band Orange, delving into grades 3-5 repertoire, meets on the same days from 8:00 to 9:15 p.m., also in SAU A130.

Get Credit!

Be sure to enroll in PRFL 282 (RIT Concert Band) to earn 1 credit per semester! If you already enjoy band, this is just the cherry on top of it all! You also don’t need to register for credit if you don’t wait to either!

Being able to earn credit while doing something I love is just the cherry on top of the experience. The RIT Concert Band isn't just about music; it's a supportive community where I've made lasting friendships and grown as a musician. Overall, it has been an incredible experience that has enriched my college journey in more ways than I could have imagined.
