The Ultimate RIT Packing Guide: Essentials for All Four Seasons in Rochester, NY

Rochester, NY is more than just a place that experiences all four seasons—it's a city I call my second home where each season comes alive, shaping your journey at RIT in ways you can't even imagine. As someone who has called RIT home for the past 2.5 years, I, Alekya Yakama, have felt the vibrant pulse of this city through the kaleidoscope of its changing seasons. Nestled in the heart of the Finger Lakes region and along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, Rochester greets you with colorful autumns that set the landscape ablaze with bright yellows and oranges, snowy winters that turn everything into a magical wonderland that makes it look straight out of the movies, springs that brings back the color into the world with array of flowers of all kinds, and warm, sun-soaked summers that invite you to explore every corner. As a graduate student, I've experienced the powerful blend of innovation, creativity, and academic excellence that flows through RIT, season after season. These experiences and insights are more than just advice—they're pieces of my own journey, tried and tested, that I hope will help you embrace all that Rochester has to offer.

Here's your ultimate packing guide to ensure you're ready for whatever Mother Nature throws your way during your time in Rochester from an experienced tiger’s perspective:

Fall: A Palette of Vibrant Colors

Autumn in upstate New York is nothing short of perfect and being in Rochester puts you at the best spot to experience it. Witnessing the unfolding of fall foliage is purely magical and I look forward to it every year as the trees burst into vibrant hues of red, orange, yellow, and everything in between creating a breathtaking landscape and beautiful sceneries that make it the best time for scenic hikes and cozy camping. A few of the best spots to do so are the Finger Lakes region, Catskill and Adirondack mountains. This is the best time to visit the Letchworth State Park also known as the Grand Canyon of the East. It's also the season of pumpkin spice and apple cider, so be sure to try them out!! The temperatures start to dwindle down, with crisp, refreshing air making it the ideal time for upping your layering game in stylish sweaters, jackets, and scarves.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Pack a good moisturizer to combat dry skin from cooler, drier air.
  • Carry umbrella, boots and a water-resistant backpack to beat unexpected rain showers!
  • Casual sneakers for everyday wear when the weather is mild.
  • Light weight sweaters and rain coats for layering
  • Boots - waterproof for hikes and heavy showers

Winter: A Frosty Wonderland

When winter arrives, Rochester transforms into a breathtaking snowy wonderland. Along with the picturesque landscape comes cold temperatures, heavy snowfalls, tasty hot chocolate and playful snowball fights! With an average snowfall of over 100 inches per year, it’s essential to pack and prepare for the cold. Winter also brings the opportunity for fun activities like ice skating, skiing, and snowball fights at the nearby Bristol Mountain. You can also explore the snowy trails at the Genesee Valley Park or Highland Park. This would be the perfect time to catch up on a few ice hockey games and you don’t have to look far!! RIT has an exceptional ice hockey team so be sure to check them out as I had such a wonderful experience attending these games, which are high on school spirit and lots of fun! For winter, dressing warmly and in layers is key to staying comfortable. Layering allows you to adjust your outfit based on changing temperatures and indoor conditions.

  • A well-insulated, water-resistant coat is crucial for staying warm and dry. Invest in one long and one short coat to be on the safe side.
  • Get your flu shot either from Wegmans or through drives conducted at RIT!
  • Layer with therms shirts and pants along with sweaters or fleece jackets which provide extra warmth and insulation.
  • Invest in wool gloves and smart gloves so you can use your phone without removing them.
  • Ear muffs or woolen hats are a much-needed staple of clothing to prevent frostbite.
  • Scarves and woolen or long socks so that you are covered in your entirety and protected from the cold.
  • Invest in good above-ankle-length winter boots to traverse through snow and slushy conditions.
  • Moisturize multiple times throughout the day and maintain temperatures at home.
  • Have a humidifier as winter is a dry season which could lead to a bloody nose.
  • Lounge at Global Village or fireplace at Midnight Oil, be sure to visit the commuter lounge for free hot chocolate!!

Spring: A Blooming Revival

Spring in Rochester makes a complete turn-a-round in terms of nature. As the snow melts away, the city slowly comes alive with colorful blossoming flowers, budding greenery, and a renewed sense of energy. It is also the season of the famous Lilac Festival held annually at Highland Park, usually in mid-May. Apart from lilacs, the city comes alive with vibrant colors as tulips, daffodils, and cherry blossoms bloom. Something I look forward to in spring is visiting the Public Market for flowers and fresh produce, and also visiting galleries downtown. Temperatures gradually rise, making it perfect for lighter jackets, raincoats, and versatile clothing that can handle unpredictable weather. Don’t forget an umbrella and waterproof footwear, as spring showers are common and bring life to the lush greenery.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Apply sunscreen before going outdoors and also moisturizer to deal with mild chilly temperatures.
  • Spring weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers that you can easily add or remove.
  • Use a mix of short-sleeved, and long-sleeved shirts, light sweaters, and waterproof coats.
  • Bring a mix of jeans, leggings, and lighter-weight trousers. Be prepared for warmer temperatures.
  • An umbrella or a  light raincoat is essential that’s breathable but offers good protection from rain.
  • Have a light scarf, hat, and woolen gloves for cooler mornings or evenings.
  • Sunglasses and a sunhat or a cap for sunny days.

Summer: Warm and Sunny Adventures

Summer in Rochester is warm and sunny, the perfect time for outdoor activities and exploration. The temperatures start to peak and go about 80s in Fahrenheit, with occasional heat waves pushing temperatures into the 90s. The warm weather is perfect for exploring Rochester's numerous parks and lakes. My personal favorite is the Durand Eastman Park, which has a beautiful shoreline of Lake Ontario. The Gennesee River is popular for kayaking and paddle-boarding. Green Lake also offers scenic views for kayaking and swimming. Many restaurants and cafes offer outdoor seating, making it a great time to enjoy fine dining and explore the city’s diverse culinary scene. Check out the Pane Vino on The River with views of the Erie Canal.  It’s also the time to break out your shorts, t-shirts, sunglasses and sundresses. Comfortable sandals and swimwear are also a must for trips to Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes, and local parks.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Apply high SPF sunscreen every 3~4 hours when you are outdoors.
  • Prefer breathable and lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen. Shorts, t-shirts, sleeveless or short sleeves, and sundresses are most comfortable.
  • Make use of sunglasses and hats or caps to protect yourself from sun rays.
  • Comfortable and breathable footwear like sandals or walking shoes.
  • Swimwear when planning a water activity or lounging in swimming pools.
  • Hydrate throughout the day!!
  • Carry an insect repellent to protect yourself from bugs especially when visiting parks and lakes.
