Winter Activities for RIT Students To Take Advantage of Before Spring Arrives
Even though winter is still around, Rochester has been snow-free as of late, making it the perfect time to explore. From scenic road trips to exciting local attractions, here’s what I did during my spring break while I stayed in the area.
1. Experience the Frozen Wonderland of Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls in winter is a breathtaking sight. The falls partially freeze, creating an icy wonderland with stunning blue ice formations and mist-covered trees. It’s a completely different experience from summer visits, fewer crowds, surreal landscapes, and incredible photo opportunities.
If you're feeling adventurous, take a walk around the falls for up-close views of the falls or visit the Niagara Falls Observation Tower for a panoramic winter scene. Even though the Maid of the Mist doesn't run in winter, you can still check out other scenic spots like the Cave of the Winds for an icy and unique experience.

2. Unleash Your Inner Child at The Strong National Museum of Play
Step back into childhood at one of Rochester’s most famous attractions. The Strong Museum of Play is filled with interactive exhibits, vintage arcade games, a massive toy collection, and even a life-size Sesame Street display.
It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon reliving childhood memories, playing retro video games, or exploring the history of board games and toys. Whether you’re a fan of classic Nintendo, pinball machines, or LEGO, there’s something here for everyone.

3. Go Ice Skating at Martin Luther King Jr. Park
If you're still in the winter spirit, glide across the ice at MLK Park, one of Rochester’s most popular outdoor rinks. Whether you're a beginner or experienced skater, ice skating is a fun and active way to enjoy the season.
This rink is especially scenic in the evening when city lights reflect off the ice, creating a beautiful winter atmosphere. Grab some friends, rent some skates, and enjoy a classic winter activity.

Cost: $5 for skate rentals
4. Take a Scenic Drive Around the Finger Lakes
The Finger Lakes region is one of the most beautiful areas in upstate New York, and it's only about an hour away from RIT. Even in winter, the landscapes are stunning, with frozen waterfalls, snow-covered vineyards, and charming lakeside towns.
Take a road trip around Seneca Lake, Canandaigua, or Skaneateles and explore the small towns along the way. If you’re over 21, you can also visit a few local wineries or breweries for tastings. If you prefer something more low-key, stop by a cozy café or bookstore in one of the Finger Lakes towns for a relaxing day.

Cost: Gas money and any spending money
Pro Tip: Drive along Route 14 near Seneca Lake for some of the best scenic views in the area.
