President's Commission: Beyond the Ratio
The President's Commission on Women organized a month-long series of events to celebrate the women of RIT called "Beyond the Ratio." This theme calls on the RIT community to look beyond the ratio of women to men at RIT and celebrate the great things women do on campus. The PCW held a Women's Expo and a Kick-Off Program and Reception to kick off the month. Over 250 students, faculty, and staff stopped by the Women's Expo and learned more about groups and resources for women across RIT and the RIT community. The kick-off program included a performance by Vocal Accent; welcome remarks from President Munson; the recitation of an original poem by Professors Nickesia Gordon; the announcement of the Edwina Award for significant efforts to enhance gender diversity; the Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program Women's History Poster contest winner, and a keynote presentation by Jennifer Gabriel of the National Women's Hall of Fame. A reception followed the program in the Vignelli Gallery. At the reception, members of the RIT Philharmonic orchestra performed, and a slide show featured women across RIT who participants recognized as someone who inspired them. More events are occurring through March. Examples include a Women's Empowerment workshop (3/24) and a panel session featuring RIT women leaders, Breaking the Glass Ceiling.
