Artificial Empathy: Medical Ethics in the Age of Simulated Humanity with Dr. Evan Selinger (Philosophy)

Abstract
Tragically, far too many doctors working in managed care are finding it challenging to speak to their patients empathetically. The empathy gap is a significant problem because empathetic care conveys dignity and can improve clinical outcomes. In this talk, I examine how artificial intelligence could be used to address this challenge and identify fundamental ethical considerations at issue in three distinct options: (1) AI doctors replacing human physicians, (2) AI-assisted communication, where physicians use large language models to help them craft empathetic messages, and (3) AI-simulated patients that train doctors to become more skillful communicators.

Student presentations: 2-5 p.m.
