Jeanne Behm, RADSCC Coordinator, and Joan Naturale, NTID Librarian, will have a table of free books you can pick up for future book discussions and upcoming spring play and author visit.

Deaf Republic is a poetic narrative by Ukrainian-born, hard of hearing poet Ilya Kaminsky about the fictional, private lives of townspeople in an occupied country who have all gone deaf and silent after seeing a soldier shoot and kill a deaf boy. They respond to this murder by turning to sign language to communicate and by committing small acts of heroism.
What is the Big Read?
Every year, the National Endowment for the Arts offers grants for programming focused on selected books. Big Reads aim to broaden our understanding of our world, our neighbors, and ourselves through the power of a shared reading experience.
In April 2023, NTID will host a Big Read (awarded to Jill Bradbury) focused on Ilya Kaminsky’s Deaf Republic. Kaminsky’s family immigrated to Rochester from Ukraine due to anti-Semitism. He attended NTID one summer while in college. Big Read: NTID co-directors are Jill Bradbury, Pamela Kincheloe, and Joan Naturale.
