AWARE-AI Trainees and other graduate students will consider the moral dimensions of human-sensing AI in democratic societies, and will discuss topics such as: (i) the potential of AI systems to contribute to or perpetuate unjust social schemes or to pose threats to civil liberties (e.g., violation of privacy); and (ii) AI’s potential as a destabilizing force in civil society (e.g., through the erosion of trust by system behaviors that are not explainable to end users).
Irina Mikhalevich is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy who specializes in the philosophy of science, cognitive science, and ethics. Her work examines methodological and conceptual challenges in animal cognition research, including how preferences for putatively simple or non-anthropomorphic explanations of animal behavior may bias the outputs of research. She is currently working on a co-authored book tentatively titled, "Alien Minds: Invertebrate Intelligence and the Evolutionary Meaning of Life." She was also part of a core team developing a new AI degree program.
