Second Harmonic Generation and Breast Cancer Metastasis
A breast cancer patient often has a round of “neoadjuvant” chemotherapy before primary tumor removal, and then may or may not have “adjuvant” chemotherapy after primary tumor removal. The side effects of that chemotherapy can be severe, hence there is a pressing need to tailor its administration to those who need it, and spare those who do not. An individual patient’s decision to undergo adjuvant chemotherapy can be informed by estimates of their probability of experiencing future metastases. We have discovered an independent prognostic indicator of metastasis which may help with this decision-making. This prognostic indicator is the directionality of second harmonic generation (SHG) within sections of excised primary tumor. The directionality of this SHG light scattering is influenced by collagen fiber internal structure. We will discuss the current development of this prognostic tool, as well as possible mechanisms explaining its prognostic relationship with metastatic outcome.
