CASTLE & DEI Seminar: Putting Grading Practices to the Test
CASTLE & DEI Seminar
Putting Grading Practices to the Test
Dr. Benjamin Schermerhorn
Instructor of Engineering Science and Physics
Monroe Community College
Abstract:
Grading and assessment are an integral part of the classroom experience, but seldom discussed or taught to prospective teachers. Let’s unpack traditional grading practices and discuss intentionality around assessment and grading practices, with the goal of supporting both learning and students. We will discuss my implementation of these practices in introductory physics and engineering statics courses and analyze their impact using success data and student feedback. This discussion and set of research-based practices follow the work of Grading for Equity: What it is, Why it matters, and How it can transform schools and classrooms by Joe Feldman.
The event will start with an 11-12pm Seminar followed by a 12-1pm Open Discussion.
Intended Audience:
College of Science faculty and those interested in teaching.
Presented by the Center for Advancing Scholarship to Transform Learning (CASTLE) and College of Science DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion).
