"Centum" is a weeklong showcase of lighting inspired from century-old design by nine RIT industrial design students. The exhibition will take place in Anderson Alley Studios (suite 401) — 250 N. Goodman St. Rochester, N.Y. An opening reception is set for 6-9 p.m. Friday, May 2, with a closing event on tap for 5-6 p.m. Thursday, May 8. All are welcome.

About the exhibition

The creative legacy of history often serves as the foundation for exciting new ideas in design. Nine senior Industrial Design students were asked to draw inspiration from designs created 100 years ago — the 1920s — as the basis for a lighting concept. Their work will be exhibited in "Centum" at Anderson Alley Studios. Centum, Latin for 100, reflects the exhibit’s historical focus.

Associate Professor Amos Scully selected the “100 years ago” theme, highlighting the 1920s as a landmark decade in design and culture — an era rich with ideas that remain influential today. Students were encouraged to source inspiration from graphic design, architectural interiors, or individual lighting designs from the period to develop their concepts.

The final works on display employ contemporary fabrication techniques, including digital CNC and laser cutting, as part of the prototyping process. The exhibit will offer opportunities to meet the student designers during both the opening and closing receptions.
