“ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL EFFECTS OF MIGRATION ON INTERNATIONAL TOURISM”
Large-scale international migration and tourism flows have become significant socio-economic and spatial phenomena of a globalizing world. Based on migration-led-tourism (MLT) theory, this research employed a panel data for 62 nations between the years 1995 and 2015 to investigate the economic and cultural effects of China’s emigration on outbound tourism. The findings show that there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between the flows of Chinese emigration and outbound tourism. Specifically, moderating factors capturing economic development levels and cultural linkages have been examined, showing that China’s outbound tourism appears to be more dependent on emigrants in developed economies and non-Confucian economies. The results also appear to be robust by using simultaneous equation models and a three-stage least squares estimation method.
