Conversations in Math: A mathematics course in RIT’s First Class Academy
A mathematics course in RIT’s First Class Academy
Dr. Tamas Wiandt
Professor
School of Mathematical Sciences, RIT
Attendees will learn about a mathematics course in RIT’s First Class Academy.
Abstract:
RIT created First Class Academy this summer to decrease the `summer melt’ in our freshman cohort. We offered tuition-free summer courses (all of them online this year), where incoming students could earn their first RIT credits. There were courses from all colleges; students were placed primarily by their stated interest. SMS offered a course titled `Street fighting Mathematics’ (the name is a shameless steal from an MIT open course); a one-credit, potpourri-style math class for majors and non-majors, containing various introductory topics picked by their usefulness and beauty (by my evaluation). I will talk about the topics, the structure of the course, the challenges along the way, and the feedback from the students.
Intended Audience:
All are welcome. Those with interest in the topic.
