Topic: Financial Markets & Institutions: How do they affect the Economy?
Abstract: This research addresses questions such as what is their structure, how do they operate, and how do they provide liquidity to customers to facilitate economic growth. Along with his broad research theme Professor Pagano will also focus on his paper on the Market-wide Impact of Levered ETF Rebalancing during Stressful Times. In this paper they show both theoretically and empirically that the interplay between investor behavior (LETF fund flows) and index return autocorrelation (a “see-saw effect”) plays a central role in either moderating or amplifying the portfolio rebalancing demand of levered and inverse-levered ETFs (LETFs). This interplay between LETF fund flows and index returns can have varied and unexpected effects on market volatility.
