Love Data: Photographs as Data: Leveraging Art for Research

This presentation will highlight an ongoing collaborative project among three RIT units (NTID, Center for Public Safety Initiatives, and RIT Libraries) that looks at technologies as social indicators of a community. Using photographs in Eric Kunsman's Felicific Calculus collection and data depicting the nearly 1500 payphone locations in Monroe County, New York, the presenters will discuss their ongoing collaboration and next steps in this project that synthesizes photography, community-centered research, and data visualization into a grounded project that displays the realities of Monroe County and highlights the voices of those who live here.

Eric Kunsman is an Assistant Professor for the Visual Communications Studies Department at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and is an adjunct professor for the School of Photographic Arts & Sciences. He holds his MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia and holds an MS in Electronic Publishing/Graphic Arts Media, BS in Biomedical Photography, BFA in Fine Art photography all from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. His photographs and books are exhibited internationally and are in several collections. He currently owns Booksmart Studio, which is a fine art digital printing studio, specializing in numerous techniques and services for photographers and book artists on a collaborative basis.

Janelle Duda-Banwar is an Assistant Research Professor in the Center for Public Safety Initiatives (CPSI) at Rochester Institute of Technology. Dr. Duda-Banwar’s background is in social work, earning both her BS and MS in the field. She began her career as a practitioner, working as a Children’s Social Worker with Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. It was here that she realized her interest in research, leading her transition into a research career. She became a Research Associate with CPSI more than ten years ago. While in this position, she took a hiatus to earn her PhD in Social Welfare from Case Western Reserve University’s Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences. She recently accepted the first-ever Assistant Research Professor position with CPSI, maintaining her role as a faculty member within RIT. Dr. Duda-Banwar has worked extensively to build collaboration across communities to address issues related to crime and justice. She focuses on issues related to policing, violence reduction, justice system entanglement, intervention research, and coordination across systems.
