Museum Studies Speaker: Anne Forschler-Tarrasch, Ph.D., "Wedgwood on Display"
The English production of china and stoneware was transformed by Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) who founded one of the largest manufactures of Staffordshire pottery. Aesthetically compelling and technically innovative across many materials and techniques—including jasper ware, black basalt, caneware, rosso antico and creamware—Wedgewood has remained collectable for nearly three centuries. Today, the largest collection Wedgwood ceramics outside of England has been assembled at the Birmingham Museum of Art.
Join us for a talk by Anne Forschler-Tarrasch on Wedgwood and display focusing on World’s Fairs, the consumption of culture in the 18th and 19th centuries, and methods of display at Birmingham Museum of Art. The talk will be followed by a question and answer session facilitated by Museum Studies Program Director, Juilee Decker.
