Engaging Students in Change Initiatives: evidence from physics education research to improve physics programs

Event Details: There is growing recognition that transforming academic environments to support students more inclusively, especially in STEM disciplines such as Physics, is crucial for their future success. In this talk, I will share evidence from Physics Education Research about how students can be central change agents in efforts aimed at improving departmental culture and practices. I will focus on three key areas: aligning change initiatives with student needs, fostering a community of practice around program improvement, and empowering students to take on leadership roles that build professional skills. This talk will prioritize practical insights that attendees can build upon. In presenting findings from my research, I hope to inspire new ideas and encourage collaborative discussions about how we can create more inclusive and engaging educational environments in Physics.
Bio: Dr. Robert Dalka (he/him) is an Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Detroit Mercy. His research prioritizes partnerships with science and engineering students focused on how they contribute to institutional change and how different academic structures interact to support students within and outside of Physics. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Maryland, where he specialized in network science analysis and ethnographic-based methods.
