The Social Psychology of Autonomy Support: Interpersonal and Contextual Supports for Well-Being
Members of marginalized or stigmatized groups typically report lower wellbeing and mental health, but there is substantial variation in these outcomes. In this talk I apply the framework of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to understand both within and between-person differences in well-being among LGB individuals, a group that is frequently subject to stigma and prejudice. In a series of studies, I show how interpersonal support and thwarting of basic psychological needs, particularly the need for autonomy, affects well-being and mental health outcomes. I will then turn to current and future directions for research, including the examination of institutional-level factors impacting basic need satisfaction and well-being in varied populations.
