To wrap up the final week of “SKETCHY!” — RIT City Art Space’s exhibition celebrating the art and creativity of skateboarding — 1975 presents a screening of SK8FACE, a feature documentary film about the history and evolution of skateboard art and culture.

Doors for the event open at 7 p.m. with the screening starting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, at The Little Theatre (240 East Ave. Rochester, N.Y. 14604). The screening will be followed by a Zoom discussion with the director, including skate art trivia and giveaways.

This screening is free for all with registration and was made possible by sponsorship from RIT’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in conjunction with 1975.

SK8FACE was directed by Matt Bass, a skateboarder, director, cinematographer, and 1991 alumnus of the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences.

It shows the evolution of skateboard art from a simple 2x4 with roller-skate wheels to skateboards hanging in museums all over the world. The film is a 70-year journey, beginning in the 1950s when skateboards were simple planks of wood, to today when skateboards are considered major works of art. SK8FACE is a historical look into how skateboard art has created its own subculture while simultaneously influencing modern pop culture.

The event was made possible by sponsorship from the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in conjunction with 1975.
