Volodymyr Zelensky: Fashioning a New Masculinity in Wartime Ukraine, a talk by Alla Myzelev, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Art History and Museum Studies, SUNY Geneseo
In April 2019, Volodymyr Zelensky achieved a landslide victory in Ukraine’s presidential election, propelled by an unconventional campaign and populist rhetoric. Initially distancing himself from his past as a comedian and “trickster” politician, Zelensky has since used his self-presentation to convey complex messages of masculinity and national identity. This lecture examines Zelensky’s sartorial choices, body language, and public behavior to explore how they communicate a shifting narrative of leadership in Ukraine.
