Architecture at RIT Granted Accreditation Candidacy Status in Program’s First Year

The Master of Architecture program is housed within the Golisano Institute for Sustainability and is a collaboration between the institute and the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences.

The National Architectural Accrediting Board Inc., the official body that establishes criteria for all professional architecture degree programs throughout the U.S., is granting accreditation candidacy status to the Master of Architecture program at Rochester Institute of Technology.

“Our program is both unique and distinct through an interwoven curriculum offering among the primary focus areas of technology, integration, urbanism and—most importantly–sustainability,” says Dennis Andrejko, chair of the Master of Architecture program.

Last fall, the board conducted a site visit and prepared a report that analyzes the new program. Over a three-day period, team members reviewed student work, examined facilities and met with RIT leadership, students, faculty and members of the professional community. The team also conducted a comprehensive assessment of the program’s initial Architecture Program Report, which outlines the program’s vision, mission, direction and scope within the context of education and the academic, professional and public communities. Later the accrediting board notified RIT that the program was approved for official candidacy status.

“We are extremely delighted to have met this major milestone, which builds upon the hard work, dedication and commitment of both professional and academic leadership,” Andrejko says. “Now we must walk the walk.”

The Master of Architecture program is housed within the Golisano Institute for Sustainability and is a collaboration between the institute and the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at RIT.

The National Architectural Accrediting Board requires these professional programs meet specific conditions and graduate its first class prior to full accreditation status. Most jurisdictions require a professional degree for architectural licensing.
