Author, Pulitzer Prize-winner to speak at RIT
Brighton resident David Cay Johnston is president of Investigative Reporters & Editors
David Cay Johnston, an investigative journalist, specialist in economics and tax issues, and Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and 13-year veteran of The New York Times, will discuss topics from his book, The Fine Print: How Big Companies Use “Plain English” to Rob You Blind, from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, at Rochester Institute of Technology.
The event will be held in the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences Auditorium and is hosted by the Saunders College of Business’ Institute for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility and Clarence B. Sheffield Jr., the Eugene H. Fram Chair in Applied Critical Thinking.
“If we are going to understand the root causes of some social and economic problems such as income inequality, it is essential that we turn a critical eye to one of the most powerful actors in our society—business,” says Sandra Rothenberg, director of the Saunders Institute for Business Ethics and Responsibility. “David Cay Johnston’s work provides insight into how our economic system is ‘rigged’ to benefit corporations at the cost of consumers and taxpayers.”
A resident of Brighton, Johnston is the president of Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE), an education organization with 4,200 members. He wrote the best-selling tax books Perfectly Legal, which won him an IRE medal, and Free Lunch. Over his 40-year career he has won many other honors, including a George Polk Award.
The event is free and open to the public, and a book signing will follow the presentation. For more information, contact Rothenberg at srothenberg@saunders.rit.edu.
