Bevier Gallery displays young students’ best art

Teachers select best-of-the-best student art works for annual RIT event

Michelle Morales, a senior at NorthRose-Wolcott High School, is one of the student participants in Bevier Gallery’s annual Rochester-Finger Lakes Middle and High School Art Exhibition.

Michelle Morales is a senior Advanced Placement design student at NorthRose-Wolcott High School who enjoys working with Adobe Photoshop with her digital photos, but also has done some impressive 35mm developing work.

Morales is one of the talented middle- and high school student artists participating in the Rochester-Finger Lakes Middle and High School Art Exhibition at Rochester Institute of Technology’s Bevier Gallery. The exhibition begins with an awards ceremony from 5 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, in RIT’s University Gallery and an opening reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Bevier Gallery (adjacent to University Gallery). The awards recognize outstanding student work in several disciplines as well as excellence in teaching and service. The show runs through Feb. 24.

According to NorthRose-Wolcott art teacher Kelley Allen, Morales has worked in drawing, painting and photography throughout her high school career and plans to attend the State University of New York at Oneonta this fall studying in Spanish translating with a minor in photography.

“Many of these students have aspirations for careers in the arts, and in the past, some have come to RIT to continue their studies,” said William Finewood, associate professor in RIT’s School of Art. “Teachers have the opportunity to select only two pieces from their very best students and I think the collection of work we are going to get will be very high quality.”

The exhibition features nearly 180 student art submissions—chosen for display by more than 100 teachers in 40-plus area schools across the Rochester-Finger Lakes region—from Webster Schroeder to Rush-Henrietta to Wayland-Cohocton. RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences is hosting the event.

Bevier Gallery is handicapped-accessible and is located in James E. Booth Hall. Visitor parking is available in E and F lots. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, 7 to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call Bevier Gallery at 585-475-2646.
