Business student featured on WXXI’s BizKid$

Jason Shanley is owner, designer of UrLocker

UrLocker’s locker covers come in a variety of designs and colors.

The laminated locker covers come in a variety of designs and colors: Football, Bubble Planet, Bubbly Rainbow, Cheetah, Dance, Colored Smoke, Floral and Circle Free Invasion. They are a mix between a sticker and a window cling—removable, reusable and leave no residue behind.

These are products of UrLocker, designed and created by company CEO Jason Shanley, a business management student in the E. Philip Saunders College of Business at RIT. Shanley will be talking about his business at 5:30 p.m. today on BizKid$—a fun, fast-paced new weekly TV series on WXXI-TV that teaches kids about money.

“The show’s producers are the creators of Bill Nye the Science Guy, and we filmed it last summer; it took eight hours to do a three- to five-minute segment,” Shanley says with a laugh. “The idea came to me a couple of summers ago when I realized how—in high school and middle school—all the lockers look the same. This is a way for students to come out of their shell and express their individuality and creativity.”

Last year, Shanley won first place for UrLocker in the Saunders Young Entrepreneurs Academy Regional “Bright Ideas” Competition—which earned him a four-year, $30,000 scholarship from the Saunders College to attend RIT and an opportunity to show his prototypes at the Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival last May. The 18-year-old entrepreneur earned enough college credits at Gananda High School to enter RIT as a sophomore.

Besides selling locker covers, Shanley has designed covers for laptops and mini refrigerators, with plans to include tablets and smart phones.
