Campus Shipping and Receiving resumes delivery service
Shipping and receiving services have resumed as the department staff have lifted the temporary, limited functions as of the start of the new academic year. The department will restart package delivery to both centralized areas and campus departments, but with safety and physical distancing procedures in place.
RIT Shipping and Receiving processes hundreds of packages and distributes materials to all campus buildings—from books and supplies to office furniture and laboratory equipment—and works directly with global companies such as Fedex, UPS, and Amazon.
In order to meet its regular, two-day delivery standard for customers, staff will implement an alternating schedule of deliveries for buildings of either two to three times per week and provide the schedule to building managers. With the addition of new package scanning equipment and additional campus storage sites, the team is ready to get back to its extensive delivery services, said James Battles, director, Special Events and Shipping and Receiving.
“We’ve been working on a plan this summer to continue services including adding four new locker banks strategically located around campus to help alleviate volumes to our most active buildings,” he said. The new lockers can be found in the Student Alumni Union on the A-level near the RITz; and in three academic buildings—James Gleason Hall, A-level; Booth Hall, A-Level; and Slaughter Hall near room 1399.
Updated processes will include:
- Packages received before 1 p.m. will be processed the same day and delivered within 48 hours after processing.
- Large orders that cannot be put into campus locker banks will be delivered directly to department main offices. Notice will be given to departments via email about packages in the lockers.
- If packages in the lockers are not retrieved, they will be returned to the main Shipping and Receiving offices located in FMS, and can be picked up during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday).
“We have a skilled and knowledgeable staff who understand the shipping and receiving processes and know how important it is for our campus customers to receive materials in a timely manner,” said Battles, who has been at RIT since 2011. He came to the university after several years at Kodak as a corporate supervisor. “Our staff has been able to adapt quite well to the changing needs on campus.”
