CANCELED: Marketing expert to discuss HBO series

Katherine Sredl’s March 13 talk will explore HBO’s ‘GIRLS’ and fourth-wave feminism

Katherine Sredl, assistant professor of marketing at Notre Dame University, will speak at RIT as part of the Kern lecture series on March 13.

UPDATE 8:30 a.m. March 13: Due to weather-related flight cancellations, this event is canceled. It will be rescheduled for another time.

Katherine Sredl, assistant professor of marketing at University of Notre Dame, is the featured speaker for the next installment of the 2013–2014 William A. Kern Lecture Series at Rochester Institute of Technology. Sredl presents “A Feminism of a Generation—Examining Multi-Platform Consumption of GIRLS” at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in RIT’s Campus Center Bamboo Room.

During her talk, Sredl will explore the relationship between technology, media, audiences and emerging fourth-wave feminism—a movement that is defined by technology and uses tools that allow women to build a reactive following online—through examining the ways that gender is presented in GIRLS, a contemporary HBO show that expresses contemporary feminist concerns. Sredl will also discuss the ways that fans of GIRLS react to mediated, gendered themes through social media.

Sredl’s research is focused on consumer behavior, specifically the relationship between the market structures and family consumer behavior, and advertising, with an emphasis on the co-constructive relationship between advertising, gender and consumption.

The Kern lecture series, sponsored by an endowment from RIT’s William A. Kern Professorship in Communications in the College of Liberal Arts, brings innovative thinkers to the RIT campus to share interdisciplinary insights into contemporary issues of communication, media and consumer culture.
