Cartoonist explores Beatlemania through comics
School of Individualized Study hosts lecture with cartoonist Carol Tyler
Carol Tyler will share a day in the life of a cartoonist and the inspiration behind the graphic novel devoted to her love of the Beatles in a free talk Oct. 11 at Rochester Institute of Technology.
The public is invited to join Tyler for her talk about being a cartoonist and her memoir, FAB4 Mania: A Beatles Obsession and the Concert of a Lifetime. The event, hosted by RIT’s School of Individualized Study, is 4:30–6 p.m. Oct. 11 in Liberal Arts Hall, room A205.
“Carol Tyler is an accomplished, award-winning comics artist and her recent book FAB4 Mania is a truly innovative, exciting contribution to comics art,” said Daniel Worden, a comics scholar and faculty in RIT’s School of Individualized Study. “A hybrid memoir, diary and history, the book encapsulates what made (and still makes) the Beatles such a vital influence on American music and popular culture.”
The book recreates the excitement of Beatlemania at its height in 1965, Tyler’s personal obsession with the Beatles and what led her to a famous Beatles Chicago concert later that year. Told in the voice of a 13-year-old author, FAB4 Mania is a facsimile of the diary that Tyler kept throughout 1965, and includes period details and humor.
Tyler’s work has been nominated for an Ignatz Award, an Eisner Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Her comics memoir, A Soldier’s Heart, won the 2016 Slate Cartoonist Studio Prize.
The talk is the first in a series of comics lectures that will be hosted by SOIS this year.
