Community Organizer, Activist and Author Rosa Clemente Presents Civil Rights Talk

As part of Rochester Institute of Technology’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the college will host community activist and author Rosa Clemente. Her talk takes place at 7–9 p.m. on Oct. 3 in Ingle Auditorium in the Student Alumni Union. She will present “The Sleeping Giant: A Historical Look at the Latino Civil Rights Movement in America.”

The program is free and open to the public. A reception to meet Clemente takes place at 9 p.m. in the 1829 Room in the Student Alumni Union.

“We are so excited to have Rosa coming to RIT. I think she will bring the students a dose of reality about the importance of unity with her ‘real talk’ approach of speaking,” says Stephanie Paredes, cultural and programmatic initiatives coordinate for the RIT North Star Center. “She has been a great representative for Latino civil rights and brings a strong message of unity, strength and courage to our campus.”

Clemente has traveled domestically and internationally to colleges, universities, high schools and prisons, delivering lectures on topics such as African-American and Latino/a Intercultural Relations, Hip-Hop Activism and Organizing to Free U.S. Political Prisoners. Rosa has appeared on CNN, C-Span, and Democracy Now, Street Soldiers, and National Public Radio. In 2001, she was a youth representative at the United Nations World Conference against Racism in South Africa and in 2002 was named by Red Eye Magazine as one of the top 50 Hip Hop Activists.

The program is sponsored by the North Star Center, Center for Campus Life and the RIT Chief Diversity Office. Interpreting will be provided for the program.
