Diagnostic medical sonography program accredited
Rochester Institute of Technology’s diagnostic medical sonography program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. The general concentration of RIT’s program received continuing accreditation and the newly developed cardiac concentration earned initial accreditation.
RIT’s BS degree in diagnostic medical sonography, or ultrasound, in the College of Health Sciences and Technology includes certificates in general ultrasound and echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound). The entire program was accredited for a maximum of five years and was found to be in “substantial compliance” with accreditation standards and guidelines established by the profession, said Hamad Ghazle, professor and director of RIT’s diagnostic medical sonography program.
“This is wonderful news and speaks very highly of the unwavering support, dedication and motivation of our entire community from faculty, staff and students to our outstanding clinical affiliates,” Ghazle said.
The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs has 70 sponsoring organizations, including the American Medical Association. Accreditation is based upon on the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
“Accreditation is not only about assessing programmatic performance, but also about transformative and strategic plans that will improve the quality and clarity of experiences of all involved and prepare individuals for a lifetime of learning and leadership,” Ghazle said.
RIT’s BS degree in diagnostic medical sonography was recently ranked one of the best four-year ultrasound programs in the country by College Choice of the Best Ultrasound Technician Schools. RIT’s program is one of only two BS-degree granting ultrasound programs in New York.
