Diversity website wins Summit Emerging Media Award

Work on site re-design with university’s web services team reaps national recognition

Two Rochester Institute of Technology departments received a Summit Emerging Media Leader Award recently for the creative re-design of the university’s Division for Diversity and Inclusion’s website. RIT’s University Web Services and Office for Diversity and Inclusion team members were given the national award in recognition of the new site’s ease of use, vibrant images and informative content.

The Summit Emerging Media Award recognizes creativity, innovation and excellence in all forms of emerging media. This award is given to marketers, coders, designers, developers and innovators who have introduced new methods for emerging media, and demonstrated excellence on the web through apps, videos, mobile sites and social media. Awardees are selected by a panel of judges from media organizations around the world.

Over the past year, the Division of Diversity and Inclusion website has expanded its content to include several new programs that have recently become part of the organization. Designers were able to maintain the character of each of the distinct programs and keep within the context the division’s and RIT’s branding, said Keith Jenkins, interim vice president and associate provost for diversity and inclusion.

“We were able to achieve our objectives of including all our departments into the site and having this be an informative, visually interesting and exciting representation of the community we’ve built at RIT,” said Jenkins.

The winning design team includes Megan Bastian, web/interactive designer; Gage LaFleur, web developer/programmer; Elizabeth Lamark, visual resource producer/photographer; and Raman Bhalla, director of University Web Services, the latter all members of RIT’s Marketing and Communications team; and Devon Watters, communication and design specialist with the Office for Diversity and Inclusion.

“It is always great to get recognition from prestigious organizations, especially when our projects are competing with national and international agencies,” said Bhalla.
