Engineering group hosts ‘Noche de Ciencias’
High school students and parents can learn more about STEM options during the ‘Night of Science’ April 23
Student leaders of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) are hosting Noche de Ciencias, a Night of Science, from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Rochester Institute of Technology. The event takes place in the Xerox Auditorium located in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering. It is a way to encourage prospective students’ interests in STEM fields.
Open to high schoolers and their parents, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about different engineering and science disciplines as well as engage in activities and demonstrations presented by current RIT engineering students and faculty members. The event is free and registration can be done by contacting SHPE leaders at ritshpe@gmail.com. Dinner will be included.
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers is a national organization whose primary function is to support Hispanics in engineering, mathematics and science. RIT’s student chapter of the professional organization focuses on supporting the academic and professional growth of current students in the engineering college as well as promoting STEM through K-12 educational opportunities and community service, said Jaden Dominguez.
“We are seeing a lot of interest in programs like this,” said Dominguez, a first-year business student from New York City, and SHPE freshman representative. “People want to learn more about enrolling in college, and this is a chance to spark that interest in STEM fields even more. The earlier we expose students to STEM fields, the more time they have to build interest and get enthusiastic about going to college.”
