Episcopal bishop to speak at RIT

Talk will also explore his experiences and perspectives on South Asian Christianity

The Right Reverend Bishop Prince Singh, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester, will discuss global and South Asian Christianity at RIT on Feb. 11.

Rochester Institute of Technology welcomes the Right Reverend Bishop Prince Singh, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester, as he presents “South Asian Christianity: Experiences and Perspectives,” 2-4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, in RIT’s Skalny Room, Center for Religious Life. The interactive talk is free and open to the public.

Singh, a native of India, became an ordained priest in the Church of South India in 1990 and served as associate rector at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Newark and rector of St. Alban’s in Oakland, N.J., until his election as bishop of the Diocese of Rochester in 2008. As bishop, Singh is a member of the board of trustees of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School and a member of the board of directors for Episcopal Senior Life Communities. He is also on the board of trustees for Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y.

“For many Christians in the west, Christianity is essentially a western religion, tied up inextricably with Rome and from there spreading primarily north and west, and eventually through the west to the far reaches of the globe,” says Michael Laver, assistant professor of history in RIT’s College of Liberal Arts. “But what many are surprised to learn is that even in its infancy, Christianity was a ‘non-western’ religion. Early and vibrant communities could be found in places like Ethiopia, Egypt, the Persian Empire and the Indian subcontinent.”

In Newark, Singh co-founded the Dalit Solidarity Forum in the United States of America, served on the board of Creative Living Counseling Center, and was an adjunct faculty member at Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, N.J.

Singh’s presentation is sponsored by RIT’s College of Liberal Arts and the Center for Religious Life. For more information, contact Laver at mslgsh@rit.edu.
