Federal initiatives and RIT's mission
Dear RIT community,
I want to take a moment to address some of the recent changes at the federal level prompted by President Trump that may affect research projects; immigration policies; and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The directives issued may potentially alter federal funding at universities. Some of these actions have had an immediate impact on our RIT community, while others have been reversed or challenged in court. These tumultuous times have raised concerns. Please know that we monitor and carefully review executive orders and pronouncements to understand their implications.
Our Division of Government and Community Relations is working closely with elected officials and national higher education advocacy groups to ensure that we continue to support all our students, faculty, and staff.
As we navigate these developments, we must remember that the individuals who make up our university community are our most valuable asset. We remain deeply committed to supporting you through this period of uncertainty and will do everything we can to provide clarity as more information is received.
Here are a few areas of impact that we know are concerning universities across the nation, along with some resources if you have questions:
Federally Funded Research
We recognize that many researchers are facing confusion and disruptions. We wish to assure you that while there may be delays in communications with agencies, such as NIH and NSF, deadlines for grant submissions and reporting will remain in place unless otherwise directed. Many federal agencies have provided preliminary guidance, and we expect more to be forthcoming. RIT’s Sponsored Research Services has established a webpage to track updates and agency guidance as it is received. Please check regularly for agency updates. RIT’s research efforts continue to have a high impact, and we remain dedicated to advancing knowledge and helping to improve the nation and the world.
Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging
RIT remains steadfastly committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all students, faculty, and staff feel valued. We believe in the power of learning from each other’s unique experiences. Our university’s strength has always been rooted in diversity in all its forms and a culture of belonging. These principles will continue to be a cornerstone of our community. If you have any questions or concerns, please connect with the Division of Diversity and Inclusion.
International Student Services
Our International Student Services office can assist with any immigration-related questions or concerns. Additionally, New York State offers support through the Office for New Americans hotline at 1-800-566-7636.
The future of the Department of Education?
The new administration has raised the possibility of dismantling the U.S. Department of Education. If pursued, this would require 60 votes in the U.S. Senate, which seems unlikely to occur. If this does occur, the national higher-education associations with which RIT actively engages believe student financial aid programs and funding for the National Technical Institute for the Deaf would be transferred to other federal agencies, where they were housed before establishing the Department of Education in 1980.
RIT/NTID already has been in contact with Congressional leaders and supporters who have affirmed strong support for continuing NTID’s mission to provide career education for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, designed to strengthen the American workforce. Questions related to NTID’s status can be directed to the President of NTID.
Our Mission, Principles and Values
Our focus remains on supporting each of you—our students, faculty, and staff—and staying true to the mission, principles, and values that define RIT. We will keep you informed as we receive more information and can offer additional guidance.
I understand that this time is filled with uncertainty and anxiety, but I am confident in our ability to adapt, persevere, and continue to make a positive impact. Together, we will navigate these challenging and fluid times with resilience, compassion, and a strong commitment to maintaining our culture and values.
Sincerely,
David Munson
President
