Film and animation MFA student wins Wacom contest

With a mix of projects ranging from illustrations to 2D animation, film and animation MFA student Ting Chu was chosen as the winner of RIT’s College of Art and Design Win a Wacom contest. 

More than 70 College of Art and Design students entered the promotion that called for students to submit a collection of work created using a Wacom product. Representatives from the pen tablet and pen display manufacturer judged the submissions based on originality, quality and detail during a multi-day visit to the college and RIT. As the contest winner, Chu received a Wacom Cintiq Pro 13. 

The PDF Chu sent in for judging contained various works completed for class assignments. 

Chu said a major project in the bunch was “The Distance of a Light Year,” an in-progress 2D animation “about a little girl looking for love in space.” A small part of the animation that was entered into the competition was made during the Pre-production for Animators class. Chu said that particular digital painting was outlined and colored using a Wacom tablet with Photoshop. 

Chu’s other submitted projects included illustrations and concept art for animations that involved combining Wacom technology with Photoshop.

“For some of the digital paintings, I would draw the outline on paper by colored pencil and then scan the sketch into the computer and color it in Photoshop because I really like the hand-drawing texture,” Chu said. “For the other paintings, I started them in Photoshop directly, but I would still use pencil to draw a page of texture and scan them into the computer and apply it as a texture layer on my works. The lighting and the atmosphere in the illustration is something that I really care about when creating a work. I love the organic style that hand-drawn paintings possess. Creating heart-warming works in digital arts is the ultimate goal that I strive to achieve.”
