Gallery r Hosts Juried Show on ‘Poetry, Craft and Performance’

Rochester art enthusiasts are invited to Gallery r’s newest exhibition, “Redefining PCP*—Students & Alumni Interpret *Poetry, Craft & Performance.” The show begins with an opening reception 7–9:30 p.m. Feb. 24 and runs through April 7.

The student-run metro showcase is now under the expansive wing of the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology. Gallery r moved into its new home last December at 100 College Ave. and sits adjacent to Lumiere Photo, home to Spectrum Gallery, and is just a few yards from the Memorial Art Gallery and Village Gate.

The juried exhibition received more than 150 submissions from RIT students and alumni. The artists were invited to “Redefine PCP”—whether they used materials such as wood, time, words or more—to reveal the fine art of poetry, craft and performance.

Jurors for the exhibition are: Frank Cost, assistant professor in RIT’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences; Tom Lightfoot, program chair and graduate coordinator for RIT’s Fine Arts Studio Program and administrative chair for the School of Art; Bob Deaver, visiting assistant professor in RIT’s School of Film and Animation; John Roche, associate professor in RIT’s College of Liberal Arts and president of the Just Poets organization in Rochester; and Jane Shellenbarger, assistant professor in RIT’s School for American Crafts.

Note: Save the date! The 2012 Gallery r Benefit will be held 5–9 p.m. March 29 at RIT’s Dyer Arts Center, Lyndon Baines Johnson Hall. The annual gala auction fundraising event, with support from Bausch & Lomb and emceed by Norma Holland, WHAM-TV news anchor, is unique in that all ticket holders who attend will leave with a beautiful work of art donated by RIT friends, students, alumni and faculty.
