Gallery r showcases works by up-and-coming artists

Unwrap your imagination while viewing the creative processes of 15 emerging artists from Rochester Institute of Technology.

The School for American Crafts BFA Exhibition will be showcased at Gallery r, 100 College Ave., from May 2 to 11. An opening reception will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. May 3, during First Friday—Rochester’s monthly citywide gallery night that encourages collaboration between nonprofit, university and commercial art venues.

The student exhibitors are all RIT seniors: Laura Garland, Brian Jascur, David Short, Fabiano Sarra, Byron Conn, Surim Lee, Jasper Signer, Thomas Zogas, Adam Dumka, Adam Horn, Risa Tanaka, Chelsea Fay, Taylor Edwards, Patrick Kinz-Thompson and Lauren Cabrera.

“Through an intensive pursuit of mastery with specific materials, these seniors have physically realized and manifested their ideas,” says Jane Shellenbarger, assistant professor of ceramics at RIT’s School for American Crafts.

“Their work exemplifies a highly developed sense of content, design and craftsmanship interpreted through clay, wood, metals and glass. The exhibition proudly reflects the sophisticated character and material mastery of a diverse group of artists.”

Gallery r is a student-run metro showcase administrated by RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences. The gallery is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, offers handicap access, and parking curbside and free in adjoining parking lots on College Avenue.
