John Tu promoted to senior associate dean
Tu has been instrumental in leading international programs and graduate education
John Tu has been promoted to senior associate dean of Saunders College of Business at Rochester Institute of Technology. Tu is a professor of management information systems and previously served as Saunders College associate dean.
“John’s steadfast commitment to the college over the past five years has been commendable,” said Saunders College Dean Jacqueline Mozrall. “He continues to work tirelessly on behalf of the college by taking on additional responsibilities and leading new initiatives. In addition to overseeing our Office of Student Services, technology services and operations areas, he is also now leading our international programs and graduate education working group.”
Last fall, Tu helped facilitate RIT’s successful academic exchange in China through an international partnership with Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU). Two new degree programs were initiated in a joint collaboration between RIT’s Saunders College and BJTU’s School of Economics and Management—with an MS degree program in entrepreneurship and innovation ventures offered at BJTU in the capital city of Beijing, and a BS degree in management information systems at BJTU’s new Weihai Southsea campus located in Shandong Province.
“It’s been 16 years since I started at RIT in 2000, and the university has fulfilled my high expectations for professional growth,” said Tu. “I sincerely want to give back, to make RIT an even better place, and this new role at Saunders enables me to do just that.
“Global diversity is an important part of RIT’s strategic plan. The broad-based partnership that I started with Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) and the successful launch of our BS MIS degree program in BJTU Weihai campus will offer RIT students more exciting opportunities for meaningful global learning experiences.”
The Pittsford resident received his Ph.D. in business administration at the University of Toledo in 1999. He earned an MS in systems engineering and a BS in management science from Jiaotong University, China. Tu has had several years of business experience in China, where he helped establish high tech joint ventures before starting his doctoral studies in the U.S.
Tu is winner of the prestigious Elwood S. Buffa Doctoral Dissertation Competition award sponsored by the national Decision Sciences Institute and Irwin/McGraw-Hill. His research focuses on information systems and operations management strategy, technology management, and behavioral issues in information systems and operations management. He has published extensively in prestigious journals such as Information Systems Research, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Management Information Systems, Decision Sciences, Communications of the ACM, Journal of Information Technology Management, OMEGA: the International Journal of Management Science, Information Resources Management Journal, Journal of Strategic Information Systems and the Computers and Industrial Engineering Journal.
“As a respected teacher-scholar and leader within Saunders College, John’s perspectives and insights as I transitioned to Saunders College dean were invaluable, and he continues to serve as a trusted advisor to me on almost all strategic and operational decisions associated with the college,” said Mozrall. “I very much appreciate his selfless dedication to Saunders College.”
